Arrived in Kochi, ancient spice port and host to the first Portugese colonial presence in India. Spread over islands and amidst backwaters.
Wander through crumbling colonial buildings: greens and clubhouses, churches and graveyards, warehouses and bungalows. Amongst traditional Hindu, and small Jain, Muslim and old Jewish districts. Fish stalls, public laundry houses, spice warhouses, shacks trading all manner of services and wares, kids playing cricket and footy and gaining the element of surprise by calling out from high branches of trees, “one photo please”. Portugese, Dutch, British buildings, still used, but never renovated.
It’s peak season, so there are no trains or flights free for a week, but i found a nice cheap place to stay.
