This temple has a flame which has continously burnt for 1500 years. There’s probably a secret door that opens if it’s extinguished, but to my dismay it was protected by glass screens.

There’s one on the top Miyajima that’s supposed to have burned for 1000 years and I had the same thought.
We saw young acolytes, as I suppose they were, running up the steps (1000 steps, probably), we guessed to keep it going, and I thought, I bloody bet that’s gone out plenty of times.
Anyway when we saw it there was smoke but no flame as such.
